Background of the Study
Business ethics play a critical role in fostering trust and loyalty between businesses and their customers. In the retail industry, where customer satisfaction and repeat business are paramount, the ethical practices of a company can significantly impact its reputation and long-term success. In Kogi State, retail stores face increasing competition, and ethical considerations—such as honesty, transparency, and fair pricing—are crucial for maintaining customer trust and securing repeat business (Ogunleye & Ajayi, 2023).

This study will explore the role of business ethics in sustaining customer trust in retail stores in Kogi State. By examining how ethical practices impact consumer perceptions, satisfaction, and loyalty, the research aims to provide insights into how retail businesses can leverage ethical behavior to improve their market position and customer retention.

Statement of the Problem
While the importance of business ethics in building customer trust is widely recognized, many retail businesses in Kogi State may not fully understand the impact of ethical practices on customer loyalty. This study seeks to evaluate how retail stores in the region incorporate business ethics into their operations and the resulting effects on customer trust and satisfaction.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of business ethics in fostering customer trust in retail stores in Kogi State.
  2. To assess the impact of ethical business practices on customer satisfaction and loyalty in retail stores.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing ethical standards in retail businesses in Kogi State to improve customer trust.

Research Questions

  1. How do business ethics influence customer trust in retail stores in Kogi State?
  2. What ethical practices are most important for sustaining customer trust in retail stores in Kogi State?
  3. What strategies can retail stores in Kogi State adopt to improve their ethical practices and customer trust?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: Business ethics do not significantly influence customer trust in retail stores in Kogi State.
  2. H0: The lack of ethical business practices does not significantly reduce customer loyalty in retail stores in Kogi State.
  3. H0: The incorporation of ethical business practices does not significantly improve customer satisfaction in retail stores in Kogi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on retail stores in Kogi State. Limitations include the potential bias in self-reported data from store owners and the challenge of measuring customer trust quantitatively.

  1. Business Ethics: The moral principles that guide the behavior of a business in its dealings with customers, employees, and other stakeholders.
  2. Customer Trust: The belief that a business will act in a reliable, honest, and fair manner, which influences customer loyalty and satisfaction.
  3. Retail Stores: Businesses that sell goods directly to consumers, often operating in physical locations or through online platforms.
